The Robb Report Collection, April 2009: Design Guide: Down to Earth Furniture, rugs, and finishes that honor their origins. Anybody who knows anything about modern furniture realizes that simplicity is key. Now that we are well into the postmodern era, we see that many of those elements of simplicity have stuck. Take, for example, the chair designed by Yves Behar for HBF. Simplicity is easily extended to the concepts of sustainability and environmental responsibility. But it does not imply boring. In this context, simple can mean a step back to the past, like the uncomplicated techniques Real Illusions uses for their finishes, or a humanitarian view of how people should be treated – a policy rug company Tufenkian has implemented and never questioned. This month we found companies that take their materials, their workers, and the world into account when creating their products. Which leaves us to ask, why is the world so complicated, when everything could be so simple?
