Shear Sensations
Long-Lasting Luxurious Rugs

Produced By Deborah Sanders and Jill Austin
Text By Deborah Sanders

In the world of textile fabrication, the percentage of fabrics woven by hand is not significant.  While some detailing, such as beading, needs handwork, without question technology has taken over the weaving process, eclipsing even its own capabilities with exquisite fabrics too complex to exist without the aid of machinery.  But it is still the hand of the weaver that creates the most sought-after luxury in rug making.  The painstaking process is best illustrated in an impressive film that Samad made titled, “Colors of India, A rug Making Journey.” The 40-minute documentary chronicles the step-by-step procedure from shearing  to shipping.

The payoff for the monumental effort depicted in the film is that handwoven rugs are almost unmatched in durability by any other product in the design industry.  Decades after draperies and upholstery have faded and become tattered, the handcrafted rug will still be around.

For the creative, rugs represent the perfect canvas.  Hence the proliferation of collections made by prominent manufacturers but envisioned by designers such as Mark Pollack, the innovator behind Pollack fabrics whose new collection for Tufenkian reflects his modernist sensibilities.

In keeping with this trend, Thomas O’ Brien has added to his own line of rugs for Safavieh.  Renowned Los Angeles-based designer Kelly Wearstler recently created her first rugs for The rug Company, and Alex Hampton brings refined geometry to a new collection for Stark.

Even rug makers specializing in machine-made collections are adding handwrought rugs to their digest.  Davis & Davis is brining out its first line of handwoven Tibetans.

Couristan references the skillful resources of India with its collection of handwovens featuring an Indo-Nepalese weaving technique.

In the foreword to the book Contemporary rugs: Art and Design, Andree Putman expresses her thoughts on the importance of the rug in any design scheme when she says, “The essential basis for any effective  interior is flexibility, and rugs will always reverberate the weakness or strength of the whole concept.  Respect them!
