The New Moderns includes six designs created by Kirar’s appreciation and fascination with contemporary art, with a handful of artists standing as specific inspirations for the line. Works on paper by Sol LeWitt, paintings by Gerhardt Richter, sculpture by Richard Serra and sound compositions by John Cage all influenced Kirar as she created these wool-and-hemp weavings. They introduce new geometric shapes, textures and colorations to the market. The surfaces are simultaneously simple and complex.
The rugs Abstract and Fragment were conceived by studying various Richter paintings and his source imagery. Kirar created Chant while blind-sketching visual interpretations of John Cage’s sound piece of the same name. Archloop is a visual map of the rhythms, sounds and movements circulating in and around Richard Serra’s massive steel ellipses. Sol LeWitt’s drawn marks combine the random and mathematical, both puzzling and meditative. Kirar’s appreciation of this work is experienced in Construct and Blipmarks which exhibit a regular and irregular rhythm in pattern.
