Bamboo silk is a soft, luxurious fabric. These rugs are made from bamboo, a perennial grass plant that’s treated to turn its cellulose into a thick paste. After it’s extracted, the material is dried and woven into thread.
Bamboo silk rugs are exceptionally attractive and decorative carpets that bring warmth to a space and enhance a room. Though their soil retention and wear is not as good as wool or natural silk, Tufenkian’s bamboo silk rugs receive a special finish which enhances performance. These types of carpets should be cleaned by a professional.
Traditional silk rugs are delicate and often more expensive than bamboo silk rugs. Made from mulberry silkworms raised in captivity, traditional silk rugs are often considered a luxury. The material has been used for thousands of years.
On the other hand, bamboo silk is fairly new. The material is more affordable than traditional silk, which comes in handy if you want a big rug. Bamboo silk is a superior type of viscose because it is made from bamboo fiber rather than wood or other materials. It also has hypoallergenic and antimicrobial properties. This type of silk rugs hold color well and are good for the planet.
A bamboo silk rug should be used in a low-traffic area to avoid damage and matting. It’s not advisable to place heavy furniture like an armoire or other solid wood furnishings on these carpets because they can’t handle the pressure. Avoid places with moisture or areas where something could be spilled.
Think of a bamboo silk rug as a treasured, tucked away art piece. Rooms that don’t get used often like a formal dining room or guest bedroom could be perfect places to display one of these carpets. You might consider a bamboo silk rug for your library or den, as long as you keep tea, coffee, and other drinks across the room or out of sight altogether.
