What’s the Best Rug Material for My Home?

Are you afraid you’ll choose the wrong rug material for your home?

Selecting a rug that’s made of 100% silk in your mudroom is not going to end well for the carpet.

But how do you know what type of rug to choose? It depends on its placement and purpose.

Learn about the different types of materials in Tufenkian’s guide to choosing the best rug for your home.

Wool

Wool offers the perfect combination of strength and comfort. This material contains lanolin which is soil and stain repellent. Wool provides superior sound and heat insulation properties. It’s non-allergenic and has been proven hygienically safe in medically sensitive areas. Wool is also flame-resistant.

Wool rugs are available in a wide range of colors and patterns because the material accepts dyes well. The overlapping structure makes wool easy to clean because dirt and liquids stay on the surface. Wool rugs are best for living rooms, dining rooms, and other high-traffic areas.

Silk

Silk rugs can be made of 100% silk or a blend of silk and other materials. This material is one of the strongest natural fibers. The silk we use in our Tibetan carpets is more durable than any low or medium-grade wool. Yet, the material remains soft and luxurious to the touch.

Though the fibers in silk are strong, they’re very fine, which makes them delicate. Patterns that contain more than 15% silk and/or have solid areas of silk require regular maintenance and vacuuming to maintain a consistent appearance. This is why silk rugs are ideal for bedrooms and other low-traffic areas.

Bamboo Silk

Bamboo silk is a type of viscose made from bamboo cellulose. It’s similar to traditional silk in look and feel, but it’s more sustainable and less expensive. Tufenkian decided to use bamboo silk after vigorous testing and comparisons to alternative products to ensure we were maintaining the highest quality for our rugs.

Our bamboo silk rugs are highly durable. Since we began using the material years ago, we have sold hundreds of carpets with significant percentages of this fiber and have found no problems with durability or cleaning. You can place our bamboo rugs in living rooms, dining rooms, or other high-traffic areas.

Other Materials

Tufenkian rugs are made from the finest materials available. We produce most of our designs from sheep's wool harvested from the Himalayas and Caucasus Mountains. We offer 100% wool, silk, and bamboo silk rugs and rugs with silk, bamboo silk, hemp, linen, and mohair blends.

Hemp

Hemp is a durable material that’s resistant to water, allergens, and dirt. It holds up well in high-traffic areas and pet-friendly homes, making it a low-maintenance material.

Linen

Linen has natural heat and moisture-wicking properties. Its natural fibers hold dye well, so your color possibilities are endless. Linen is a soft, comfortable, eco-friendly material.

Mohair

Mohair has similar qualities to silk with its luster and shine. Like linen, this material is moisture-wicking and retains color well and is strong and durable like other natural wool fibers.
